Sleeping in accommodations in Janiculum area in Rome,as bed & breakfast or self catering apartments, means to see Rome in all its wonders

Famous location for romantic walks under tree-lined streets and unforgettable panoramic views of Rome.
Among the most popular places in the Gianicolo undoubtedly the Fontanone (so named by the Romans), the original name is  “the Acqua Paola fountain”, erected in 1612 by Flaminio Ponzio in collaboration with Giovanni Fontana, commissioned by Pope Paul V; Piazza Garibaldi (with the statue of the hero of two worlds) and avenues with the busts of Garibaldi, in memory of the events of 1849 when Garibaldi valiantly defended the Roman Republic from the assault of the French troops commanded by General Oudinot, called by Pope Pius IX.

Also always on the Gianicolo is the equestrian statue of Anita Garibaldi, with the tomb at the base, and the church of San Pietro in Montorio.

According to legend, the hill of Gianicolo would house the city founded by the god Janus, hence its name.

Janus had several children, and from one of them, Tiber, derives the name of the river of Rome, Tevere.
For those who want to take home pictures of Rome, can not miss a visit to the Gianicolo, where you can see the details of all the city's monuments.

Booking accommodations in Janiculum area gives you the chance to hear the Traditional firing (blanks) of the cannon at noon, which was introduced by Pope Pius XI in 1847 to "synchronize" the bells of all the churches of Rome.
The cannon was in Castel Sant'Angelo, moved in 1903 to Monte Mario to then be positioned after a few months on the Gianicolo.
