The catacombs take origin at the end of the second century from some Christian private tombs and a funeral area directly dependent from the Roman Church. Take their name from the deacon Callistus I, elected by Pope Zephyrinus as responsible for the administration of the cemetery. Callisto, become Pope, enlarged the funerary complex, which soon became the official one of the Church of Rome.
