And here, in 222 A.D. was built the first church dedicated to Our Lady, by Pope Callistus I
The theme of the Virgin Mary is recurrent in the church, in a niche on the Romanesque bell tower in the center of the ceiling, the mosaics and the following centuries the church underwent changes.
The current structure is due to the reconstruction completed in 1148, with material from the Baths of Caracalla.
The interior of the Basilica is composed of three naves, divided by 22 antique columns of granite, of various diameters.
The square in front of the Basilica is a very famous point for those who visit the area of Trastevere, and for all those guys who especially in the summer attend the aforesaid area.
