At the foot of the Pincio terrace, from where you can admire the best views of Rome, here's Piazza del Popolo ("People's square"), People’s square, the ancient seat of games, exhibitions and executions. Piazza del Popolo is the last work, very scenic, produced by the Papal Rome. At the entrance of the square, Piazzale Flaminio, you will find the door that was born as Porta Flaminia, used by those coming from the Via Flaminia, and was one of the main gateways to the city. Then changed its name several times, finally  becoming the Porta del Popolo.
The word  "People" may derive from the dedication of the church of Santa Maria del Popolo, in 1099, to the roman people, that had allowed, at its expense, the liberation of the area by demons and witches.
Santa Maria del Popolo is the largest of the three churches in the square was built in the Middle Ages but renovated several times up to the complete renovation of the Renaissance.

The other two churches, called “twins”, Santa Maria in Montesanto and Santa Maria dei Miracoli, were built in the sixteenth century by Bernini.

In the center is placed the Flaminio obelisk, is the oldest and the tallest in Rome after the Lateran one, is a granite monolith built in 1200 BC and brought to Rome by Augustus, who originally placed it in the Circus Maximus. In 1589 Sixtus V wanted it in Piazza del Popolo and in 1823 the Valadier adorned with a base of four tanks and four Egyptian lions.
The two fountains of Valadier contribute to the charming atmosphere of the square.
