On top of the Esquiline Hill, in a area full of accommodations as B&B and apartments, here is Santa Maria Maggiore, one of the four papal basilicas of Rome, ordered according to legend by Pope Liberius following a dream (made the night between 4 and 5 August 352 AD, also by the rich patrician John, who contributed economically to the works), in which the Madonna invited him to erect the church where a miracle would be occurred. This miracle happened  the morning after, with a snowfall on the hill Esquilino, snowfall still commemorated on August 5 of each year with a celebration .
It preserved the ancient Christian structure with three naves. Noteworthy are the mosaics of the nave and the triumphal arch.
In 1700 the architect Ferdinando Fuga reworked the interior and facade of the Basilica.
In the Basilica are the remains of the cradle of the Infant Jesus in an urn oval crystal and silver, designed by Giuseppe Valadier in 1800.
